The many flavors of Linux

For any of my regular readers that are interested in setting up a Linux system at home/work Dr. Bacchus is working on journaling his search for a user friendly distro that can be used for his wonderful Apache training classes.

As each distro is measured the good Dr. lets us in on the pros and cons and in some cases, the sillyness of each distro.

Worth looking at even if you have no idea who put the genoo in gnu.

Google Referers

Strangest referer so far from google.ca: basil and chris .com

Interestingly enough I am the number one site listed in google.ca for that search; basil is number three.

Software Development

I have added a page for the software I am developing currently, you can find it here.

Here you can check the progress of each endeavor and when downloads are available help a brother out with testing and bug reporting.

Anywhoo, that is all the nonesense for right now.

Blast!

Hmmm... it seems that some of my sites gnarleyness, in this case the search engine friendly URL hack that is running, breaks some of the features on older posts.

If you are looking for a specific post and utilize the category links, just change the URL syntax from http://chrisjdavis.ath.cx/archives/cat/3 to http://chrisjdavis.ath.cx/archives?cat=3 then all the comments and pingback will work again, or you can use the sitemap feature which I wrote for this specific reason, which will allow you to forgo the above rewriting of URL's. I am going to look into repairing this in the next few days, once I have enough time to look at the archive hack code and find out what is going awry.

YellowDog

Well I am updating this entry with my shiny new Linux install on my tiBook. I am impressed with how zippy this is, but I don't think I will be giving up my Aqua environment anytime soon.

This should be interesting as I become more and more comfortable with the Linux UI. And hey thanks for the save Basil, sometimes the easiest commands are the hardest to find.

Well as I write this I am watching and waiting for my tiBook to finish installing Yellow Dog Linux.

I am hoping to be an active member in the Lexington Professional Linux Users Group, or LPlug as it is more widely known. Of course this would make more sense and not be so silly if I actually had a linux distro running somewhere here locally.

So I opted for my laptop since I will be taking it to meetings and the only other mac I have that would run it well is my webserver and that is doing just fine with OS X.2 Jaguar.

Wow in the couple of minutes that is has taken me to write this the installation is almost complete. Just have to love the G4. Mmmmmm... Altivec goodness. Which reminds me, I wonder if the kernel that is being installed is altivec aware? Well since the install is just about complete I guess I will be finding out shortly... won't I?

Well that is it for now off to the wonderful world of Linux.

YANF

Yeah the title says it all.

Today on ChrisJDavis.org we are introducing Yet Another New Feature. If you look to the left you will see below the blog stats the Calendar feature.

This is a continually updated iCal export that lets you know what I am doing from day to day.

Yeah, like you wanted to know.

Ahhhh.... BBspot

My suspicions confirmed, sometime in early 2000 the Beast, aka Micro$oft purchased Evil from satan. Yeah you heard me... the proof is right here on line.

Here is an excerpt"

"We feel that there are real opportunities with evil, and that when evil is integrated it into our next generation of Windows products consumers will appreciate evil on their desktop," said Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates. "Businesses haven't been able to fully realize their evil potential. With evil integrated into Office 2001, corporations big and small will begin to see enhanced evil productivity."

"Evil is a real growing market," market strategist Frank Dresgan of Merrill Lynch said today. "Microsoft is a little late in the game, but even when they enter a market late they still tend to dominate. I think we'll see the same with evil."

And also from the staunch newspeople at BBspot comes this gem:

The extensive background check would include cross referencing credit card numbers with local merchants sales logs looking for purchases of dual-cassette decks between the years of 1980 and 1987. It would also include checking for installation of file sharing software, knowledge of the Internet, and the ability to hum. Any of which would bar the purchaser from receiving his drive.

That's right this article outlines the RIAA's lobbying for background checks and 3 day waiting periods for all sales of cd-rw's.

It's just a matter of time...

Broken Features

For any of you that have tried to use the Sitemap Feature, for the past couple of days and found that it was broken I do apologize.

I upgraded my b2 weblogging software and had neglected to add the hack back in that allows that page to function. It is fixed now so again my apologies.

Bah! Enough.

Can I never get away from finding that Reepicheep Kevin Basil and I were either seperated at birth... a couple of years apart; or we are two halves of the same being split by some cosmic catastrophy.

He is the embodiment of all the philosophical hopes and dreams, desire to enlighten those around him and... conduct choirs that resided within the person of Christeven Frittsavis, and I am the embodiment of all the sarchasm, pretentiousness and charisma. Love me, you know you want to. It is useless to resist.

Anyway back to a semblance of normalcy, it appears that once again the aforementioned spice and I are alike once again. If you keep up with this blog, besides my condolences for the death of your life, then you have read my quip entitled My Personality.

Basil and I are both iNFj. That coupled with the fact that I too took the Narnia Quiz, and low and behold I as well am The Voyage of the Dawn Treader kind of seals it don't you think. One intersting thing though is that I have not read all, actually most of the Chronicles of Narnia; so having not read this book I am intersted in the outcome.
