Sometimes, there is no way around it... however, there is still WAY too much text-in-image abuse going on for how far down the road we are in regard to CSS...
There are very few instances that I would agree that you have no other choice than to use an image, maybe if the text in question were not meant to be functional, but purely a design element.
The site that inspired this post used text for links in headers and sidebars, they even had mouse-over states since the text were links.
