Out of touch, after a fashion

I am leaving today to attend the CCCU Tech Conference where for once, I will be attending and not speaking. Hopefully I can learn me something.

I will have sporadic access to email, and the net so if you don’t hear from me right away, it isn’t because I am ignoring you, or more often the case, don’t have time to respond.

Have a good week everyone.

An irritating problem

I am having an odd problem, and I have run out of patience trying to solve it.

For some reason, in the last 2 - 3 days my js-foo has been breaking in Firefox.  And not all the time mind you, sometimes you will load the site and it will work fine.  I have it working in Safari, the only other browser I care about.

So since my javascript-foo is not strong at all, I thought I would make a call out to my friends in the blogosphere: “Help a brotha out!”

You can see all of my code by viewing the source of my site and checking out the contents of cjd-boot.js and comms-js.js; that is all there is to it really.

Any help would be appreciated.

Where am I exactly?

I am sure some of you are wondering where I am lately, and what I am up to.  Quite a few irons are in the fire currently, let me show you a couple of them.

On the book front

Hot on the heels of my Blog Design Solutions experience I was offered a book deal of my own by Apress. I am 5 chapters in on a book that covers development with WordPress.  Aren’t you all excited?

Well look at that!

9rulers sweeping at SXSW this year.

It looks like some congratulations are in order for some friends.  Veloso, brought home the gold (blog design of the year) as well as 9rules as a whole and Mike won designer of the year.

I will let them hoot and holler in more detail later, but I just wanted to say congrats from me.  Well deserved all around.

Pleasant Conversations

It is not that often that you are able to have a pleasant conversation online.  Add in that you are trying to offer support and help, and it gets even unlikelier.  When you add in the whole “internet celebrity” angle and well as my redneck step-father would say “kadie-bar the door”

The thing is, that now on no less than three separate occasions I have had wonderful conversation with Molly E. Holzschlag.

Molly E. Holzschlag

If you have been living under a very large rock for the last few years, Molly is one of the driving forces behind WaSP, which if she did nothing else would cement her place in Web Design and Accesability History, but no!  Molly is also the author of numerous books and articles.

So why, in the name of all that is Holy is she talking to YOU?

Seriously man, what is up with that yo?  Bottom line, right place, right time.  She needed help with her WordPress install and you know that is my thing, so I offered my help.  Thankfully I was able to help her, but during the process conversation would just break out, I mean some times the IM session was just lousy with meaningful, insightful conversation.  Yeah I know what you are thinking, and you would be right.. I didn’t talk much, I just listened.. or read.  You know what I mean!

All this to say that it is refreshing to meet someone and find out that yes, they are that cool.  Not only is she gracious, she makes with the linkage!  So I thought I would return the gesture by pointing any of my readers to her, she is way more worth your time than I am, so go and learn yerself something!

I have added the really nifty recent referrers to the sidebar, which is a good thing.

Unfotunately the search string pattern used by google.com is not valid (X)HTML

Cleanup complete…

Well after upgrading b2 a couple of times I lost all my groovy adherences to accessability and validation services.

I have cleaned up b2, and even gone beyond what I formerly had. This site now validates as XHTML 1.0 strict :: CSS 2 :: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 and U.S. Section 508 Guidelines.

Go me.

As for the error that is displayed on the W3C guidelines page, there is nothing I can do about that; it refers to the comments, pingback and trackback links, and since this is a serial blog they have to have the same link text, but point to different url’s. I can’t really do anything about that. That is the only error and the rest are reccomendations; not needed to be valid, and a couple are “we don’t know if this applies to you, so you have to figure it out”; And none of them pertain to me.

Nothing like good natured shaming.

Well MeanDean is at it again.

This time he is reminding us that we as +3cH +yPE PE0plE, should be spreading the word about the BlogMD initiative.

Of course he is correct. I was just formulating opinions on this subject before I added any content to the blog about it. I still don’t have any concrete feelings about it, other than to say that it is good, and that it needs to happen, but not at the expense of the less technical.

XHTML 1.1

I have officially moved to the 1.1 doctype of XHTML

I currently am looking into the feasability of moving to 2.0 once more than a draft is released.

Praise Yaweh!

Or Hallelujah! Whatever.

I just might have to stop making so much fun of AOL. It seems that the new version of thier connectivity software for MacOS X.2 ships powered by Gecko.

This is truly amazing. So this means that now when an AOL surfer happens upon this site, if they are running 10.2, it will render properly. Amazing. What next, fewer advertisments and better internet service?

Check out this for the full story.

Isn’t that funny?

According to Bobby, I am section 508 compliant.

I am not at this time fully WAI compliant, but I am not that far off, I meet priority 1 requirements. I would like to note at this time that some other sites are not 508 compliant, and are just as bad off as I am in the WAI area.

So, why is my markup invalid, when those who wax poetic about valid markup, are in the same accessability boat I am?
