Working hard at Viewzi

Not sure what happened, but I edited this post, and Habari deleted it, so here we go again.

Colin asked me to help test a new service, 15 seconds and so Nathan, Jared and I got together to make a little video. Here it is for everyones amusement:

Things I learned on the trip to Texas

So here is a short list of things that I learned on the way down to our new pad in Plano TX:

  1. A 24 foot moving truck is not cool. In fact it is a 24 foot juggernaut of crappiness. I would recommend saving yourself the time and money by just poking yourself in the eye with a pencil instead.
  2. If you have a radio show that plays only R&B loves songs, by no means should you name it “sweat hotel”. I can’t stress this enough.
  3. Having a petite wife who loves to drive large trucks is awesome. Frickin awesome.
  4. Texas has the scariest drivers I have come across thus far. Scariest.

I am still not on the interwebs at home, so my time is rationed in a way I haven’t experienced since the mid 90’s when I was still on dial up. Hopefully this will be remedied soon.

Until then, see you when I see you.

Death to IE!

mysqlgame is probably not displaying properly in IE. We suggest Firefox or another standards-compliant browser. We’re not trying to be jerks about it, it’s just there’s only so much time in the day to spend trying to defeat Microsoft, and we gave up.”

Deploying web apps with SVN

I sat in an interview today where the interviewee lamented the lack of a clearly laid out tutorial on how to deploy web applications with SVN.

Since this is exactly what we do at $work, I thought I would try my hand at hammering something out here. In this little diddy we will cover the the uses of trunk and tags. Also, please understand this is how we do it, not The One True WayTM.

Here are the terms I will be using, and what I mean when I type them:

Yep, we’re moving to Texas.

Come September 1st, I will have a new job and my family will be living in a new state.

I know what you’re thinking. “Chris in Texas, where it’s hot, and hot and Oh my Lord it’s Hot!” Yeah I try not to think about the melting that will be happening after I get there.

Elevated temperatures aside, I and my family, are very excited about this move. My time at Asbury has been great; I have grown as a person, developer and employee in ways that I didn’t think possible a little over three years ago when I took the Web Architect postition.

Habari 0.5 is out

After much toil and sweat, mostly by other people, the Habari Community is proud to announce the immediate availability of our newest stable release.

There are too many changes to name, so you just need to go download it and take a look.

Making a watercolor, on the cheap

If you ever find yourself needing a piece of “art” and only have a photo to work with, then have I got a tip for you.

The process is fairly simple, but it does require Illustrator and photoshop. I am still working with CS2 at work and at home, so the steps I outline here will be for that version of the software.

Step 1: pick a photo

First, select the photo you want to use, I chose this panorama of the Asbury College campus:

You know your a dork when

You are asked to fill a drop down with a range of heights, and you immediately write a PHP snippet to do it for you.

For those interested, this little routine could be useful for future use:
