Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, BAM! I hit you with a new design.
I really dug the previous design, but it never felt... refined. There was just something missing. So I started thinking about what designs of mine that I have liked the most over the years, and each one I came up with had a couple of things in common.
First of all, they were narrow widths. I am a big fan of using more screen real estate, but there is just something I dig about a narrow design. Maybe it is the ease with which you can read the posts. Who knows. I just love em.
Second, they all had at least the illusion of a single column. I think that the previous design suffered from "too much crap" syndrome. There was just so much going on, that it was hard to find exactly what I wanted you to read. With this new design, I am going back to my older mantra: Content is King.
Well that is it for now, i am tired and need to get some sleep. Things aren't 100% yet, so bear with me and the rough edges. Oh and do let me know what you think, hate or love.

Wow. Just wow all over. This is really beautifully done. My only gripe is that at 1680x1050 you can see the background repeating at the bottom of the window. Other than that this you've done a fantastic job. Well done!

Really nice work, Chris. It certainly minimises distraction, and is really easy to read.

Thanks guys!
Adam: Yeah, I hear you about the background image. I am trying to decide the correct balance of height and file size right now. I hope to have it remedied in the next couple of days.
Michael:Good to know I hit my target! I really feel like the previous design was a failure because of how hard it was to use.

I like it. The images and colors are wonderful, as is to be expected. One thing I didn't expect was that when I resize my browser window horizontally there seems to be a minimum left margin on the content, that's really slick.

Chris,
I always love your simple, yet elegant designs. It's your thing! I'll see a site with these design elements and think, that looks like a Chris J. Davis site.

Dewd. Nice use of the chess icons in the comments section. It works well with the coat of arms insignia to the left. Digging the King (you) vs. Pawns (us).
Can I be a Rook? Pretty pleeeze?

Hey BigNerd.
The icons are based on the number of comments you have. So sure you can be a rook, just comment more!

What's with all the google spam at the bottom of the home page? Links to a bunch of random stuff. It was there in the last version, too, it just wasn't visible...

Yeah, it didn't stand out as much in the old design. Those are my "help me pay my mortgage" links. Unfortunately 3 people living on one income is a bit difficult.
If this was the days of the renaissance, I might have been able to find a wealthy patron to lavish money on me. Alas, this is not the renaissance, so I am selling space on my site to help keep my wife at home, and my son fed. Now, if someone would like to commit to donating $800/month to my paypal account for the next year, I would love to kick the links to the curb.
I don't see that happening though.

You're making $800/month off those links? Dear god, where do I sign up? =)
Although technically doesn't that all violate Google TOS and whatnot? Won't they eventually remove you from their listing entirely?

Yeppers i really dig this design, the dark background combined with the light post area really makes the content pop out and it's really easy on the eyes.
Although i do admit, my all time favorite CJD design was not last one but the one before that.. The one on Habari. Speaking of which 0.4 is going flawlessly.
I see the crown/shield image made a reincarnation on this design also, what does it represent Chris if you don't mind me asking?

Nice, I also believe less is more, though I have a hard time sticking to it.
I wonder what my chess piece will be?
