The Beginning of the end
Last night Heather and I watched the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas Special, and while it was great as always, there was a certain sadness attached to it as well.
This special heralds the beginning of the end for the tenth doctor David Tennant, who I have to say is my favorite since Tom Baker. I am pretty sure that Tennant will replace Baker as my favorite Doctor.
I grew up watching Doctor Who on the local PBS affiliate in my how town. Although the Baker Years were my favorite, until now, I loved watching all the different incarnations of the Doctor.
Doctor Who embodies all that is best in Science Fiction television. Stories that transport the viewer to fantastical lands full of amazing beings and harrowing adventures.
The new Series added to this pedigree by including complex writing and story lines that contained emotion and pathos in a way that we haven't seen in this genre in a long time. Two of my favorite storylines from the new series are The The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit and The Fires of Pompeii.
Both of those stories deal with amazingly complex and emotional content, without destroying it by increasing the Flash Gordon noise and throwing more science stuff around.
It is truly sad that we only have four more stories to look forward to with the tenth Doctor. We can only hope that they find someone to replace him that can carry on the level of excellence we have seen from Tennant over the last three series.
If you need me I'll be in the TARDIS.
